It’s funny how things work out sometimes. Robert Macfarlane’s “Underland: A Deep Time Journey” was Jim’s favorite book of 2019, and it was Stanley Donwood’s glorious painting “Nether,” which illustrates the book’s cover, that first drew Jim to it in a local bookshop. Robert wrote a piece on the Penguin site about writing the book and specifically about the notebooks he kept while doing research, and it turns out, many of those journals were Field Notes.
WHAT LIES BENEATH
With a quick email exchange, a swap of a signed copy of the book for a box of Field Notes was arranged. Fast forward to the publication of the paperback of “Underland” and it seemed natural to produce an Underland Field Notes collaboration. We’re proud to say that this limited edition is available now. Even if you’re not planning a trip to the catacombs under Paris, or the “starless rivers” that flow below the limestone in north-west Italy, we hope you’ll find these useful to record your own adventures.

It has been a while since we have implemented a new format for a Quarterly Release, and it has been a really long while since we first considered this one. We hope you’ll agree, it has been worth the wait.
Introducing our completely new Seasonal Release for the Summer of 2020, the “Heavy Duty” Edition. Each pack contains a pair of memo-sized Work Books, durable enough for your toughest assignments.
The covers are made of extra-beefy “Super Duty Chipboard” and have been screen-printed with thick, opaque ink, one in DDC Orange and one in Blue Sky Blue. The “flip” books are bound from the top with sturdy Double-O Wiring, to make it easy to take notes with one hand while holding the book with the other. Each book contains 80 pages, Ruled on the front with a Double Graph Grid on the back, so you’ll have space for making lists and for sketching out plans too.
Each 2-Pack includes a “Stay-Shut” Band of Rubber, sized to keep things extra-solid when your “Heavy Duty” book is packed away. The wire rings are also a good place to stash the subscriber-exclusive “Natural Finish 3-Inch Field Notes Hex Pencil.” We hope these bad-ass little companions can help you stay one step ahead of your to-do list.

Pitch Black Memo Book

AN UPDATED CLASSIC
Our “Pitch Black” dot-graph Field Notes Memo Book was introduced in 2013, and it quicky became one of our most popular memo books. After a few reprints, we’ve made some upgrades, and we’re now offering a range of Pitch Black books with a variety of options.
Our classic 3-1/2" × 5-1/2" Pitch Black memo books are still available in 3-Packs with the original Dot-Graph 60# Finch Opaque body paper, but there’s also a Ruled version now. Both versions are bound with glossy black staples and sturdy 118# covers featuring new, Field Notes-exclusive black/kraft duplex paper from French Paper Co. (see film below). The family also features a new Pitch Black logo discreetly printed on the back. (We just might get that tattooed somewhere…)
Pitch Black’s always been considered Field Notes’ more “urbane” offering, a favorite everywhere from the white-collar downtown boardroom to the black-turtleneck uptown studio. The new kraft inside covers add a hint of earthy charm to Pitch Black’s hip professionalism. Or professional hipness, if you prefer. Either way, Pitch Black makes a fashionable home for your best ideas.
2 SIDES TO EVERY STORY
Pitch Black has always been one of our best sellers. Aside from expanding the Pitch Black series to include additional sizes and interior page styles, we’ve also upgraded the look and feel of the books. Perhaps the biggest change is moving the series to custom-duplexed covers. Working with our pals at the French Paper Company in Niles, Michigan, we created a Field Notes-exclusive cover stock made up of “Blacktop” for the outsides and fused it to our standby “Packing Brown Wrap” for the insides. It was a big undertaking, involving lots of steps and the final result is pretty special. For those who dig machines in motion and sweet and messy industrial environments, we present “Cover Story”, a documentary on the whole process.
EXPEDITION 3-PACK 3.5" X 5.5”

FNC-17 marks the start of our fifth year of our Quarterly Editions. In that time, we’ve explored a wide variety of papers, colors, and printing techniques, but with this new Expedition edition, for the first time, we’ve actually expanded the type of paper used in our notebooks.
Aesthetically, you’ll find an all-new design with plenty to like: a hi-visibility “Antarctic Survey Orange” front cover and “Polar Night Black” back cover, with a subtle varnish effect featuring a topographic map of Antarctica. The body pages feature our popular dot-graph paper printed in light gray.
But the real innovation here is the paper. It’s maybe not even fair to call it paper. The whole book is printed on Yupo Synthetic paper, an amazing tearproof and waterproof paper extruded from polypropylene pellets in Chesapeake, Virginia. We could go on and on about our new notebooks’ durability and incredible properties (especially in concert with the new Space Pen, FN-19), and we will, in this series of 12 (reasonably) scientific tests:
Months of development and testing were required to get these books just right, and we’d like to thank Yupo for their extensive support, as well as the great printers and ink technicians that pitched in to help.
The majority of our customers may not test the limits of these notebooks, but the map of Antarctica is neither hyperbole nor coincidence. We’ll be sending the Expedition edition to the South Pole with explorer Ben Saunders as he and his team retrace Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s ill-fated journey to the Pole and back, on foot and unsupported, starting in October 2013.
Note: Synthetic paper is nonporous and doesn’t absorb ink like our conventional papers. Ballpoint pens, pencils, or fine tip Sharpies work best.
Single STENO Pad 6" X 9"

Sometimes you need a bigger notebook, one that’ll lie flat on your desk, ready for to-do lists and phone messages. Sometimes you need The Steno.
The Steno is 6" by 9" with a black “Double-O Wiring” spiral at the top so it lies flat, open or closed. Inside you’ll find 80 pages of 70# “Bright White” paper Gregg-Ruled with a fine, soy-based application of “Double Knee Duck Canvas” light brown ink. The covers are 60 pt. “Super Duty Chipboard,” with a screen-printed 1-color application of “Dictation Smudge” black ink.
The inside covers provide a range of useful information, from the history of stenography and an abbreviations guide, to temperature conversions, planetary distances from the sun, a hobo symbol quick reference guide and more. Frankly, we wonder how we ever got by without one open on our desks at all times.

A simple, effective and ingenious way of organizing the myriad of little bits and bobs we just can't live without. Built to withstand the rigors of combat using 1000d Cordura nylon, real YKK zippers and pulls, and mil-spec thread an
I'm an EDC-er. I'm not the least bit ashamed... proud of it in fact. I believe that every real man has a responsibility to have on him the things he will need to take care of a certain amount of basic tasks for both himself, or anyone he may meet in the course of a day. I never could understand some of my friends that wouldn't even carry a simple pen with them. They would tell me "someone will have one there". It blows my mind. In fact, back in my retail days my first test for a prospective employee was whether or not they asked me for a pen when they came in to fill out an application.
Part of the fun of being an EDC-er is seeing what other people carry with them. The odd lots of pocket dumps and gear load-outs are as individual as the person carrying them (myself included). Along with this litany of necessaries is the ritual of where they go, and WHY. Those with expensive knives and tactical flashlights don't want them rubbing. A lefty needs certain gear in the front left, just as the righty needs it in the right. Those that sit in an office all day don't want to be sitting on a wallet... the reasons go on and on. I had the same ritual, and it would always leave my wife in disbelief each evening as we snuggled up on the couch and she made me dump the hard lumps out of my pockets on to the coffee table (and yes, that was even when I was lounging around the house in my PJs). I have my "holy trinity" that need to be with me at all times because I'm ALWAYS using them (my flashlight, pocket knife, and pen). Other things are just convenient... like a toothpick or nail clippers.
Packing and unpacking myself a few times a day as I changed clothes got to be long and tiresome. If it was summer, I was always worrying about my carbon steel knife rusting, or some other randomness. I needed to do something. Cue the A-HA moment here! I first developed this idea back in 2015. I have spent the last year playing with and remaking it until I finally arrived at what you see here.
Measuring in at at approximately 3.25" wide and 5.25" tall, the PocKit is designed to hold all of your small daily essentials, and do so safely and unobtrusively. It is crafted from water resistant 1000D Cordura Nylon, sewn with Mil-Spec Nylon#69 thread, and edged with Mil-Spec tape. The zipper AND pull are YKK #5. The pull is silenced with gutted 550 cord (great for opening while wearing gloves).
The Poc-Kit is truly designed to be something a servicemember could take into battle (which means that the rest of us will never have to worry about it failing). The front of this version sports two slots of varying heights to hold your most important items allowing easy access with sizes ranging from a full sized modern folder to a 23mm diameter flashlight. The back unzips revealing a capacious pocket that holds everything else you may need for your day. The Urban Grey color works equally well no matter what you wear, hides unobtrusively and it slips neatly into your pocket where it is tall enough to not fall over and sit uncomfortably sideways.
What's MY favorite part? The fact that when I get up in the morning, I can slip this one pouch into my shorts or flannel pants and be ready to get the kids off to school, then when I get dressed it's just as quick to get ready for the day! At the end of the day when I retire back into those wonderful lounge pants, it slips back in and I'm ready to enjoy the evening. Cuddle time? It only takes me a second to make sure the Missus is comfy without her shaking her head in disbelief (which usually killed the moment to be honest). d tape, this is an item you can trust with the things you depend on most.
PocKit Pico: Classic Carry
Canadian Orders Ship Free
Sometimes, your carry needs to be a bit smaller. Maybe you have a great little Barlow, or a Peanut and the slots on a standard PocKit are just too long. The space pen you carry disappears, and you need your light to find your light in a standard PocKit. Or, you want to combine your EDC, and your wallet. OR, you're in the service (THANK YOU) and you need something a little shorter to fit that weird blouse pocket. Or, you know.... woman jeans, am I right?!
THIS ONE'S FOR YOU
The PocKit Pico is built to withstand the rigors of combat, but match just as well with your office essentials. Hand crafted from 1000d Cordura Nylon, with Nylon No. 69 thread, YKK zippers and pulls and mil-spec tape, this will definitely be the last organizer you'll ever need. Slightly smaller than our standard PocKit, the Pico Classic boasts 3 slot pockets on the front so you don't have to choose whether or not you want to carry a pen instead of a flashlight, or a smaller knife (something I would actually do... don't laugh!). The knife slot holds knives of a more diminutive nature, like a scout knife, the Barlow I was talking about before, or your favorite sub 3 ⅝" slipjoint. The light slot at the end is made for AAA sized lights. The full slot behind holds cards, ID or the like. The more manageable rear zipper pouch has its zipper oriented to better hold credit cards or identification, as well as your other daily bits and bobs with a full length YKK zipper. You don't have to do it the way I did though! Find your own combination that covers your EDC needs!
Measuring in at approximately 3 ½" X 4 ½" when filled, the PocKit Pico is just the right size for front pant pockets in shorts, jeans or slacks, or combat uniform sleeve pockets. Having everything organized in a vertical fashion means the PocKit Pro bends with the curve of your limbs, leaving a very trim profile in your pocket so you won't ruin the nice lines on those pants you love (though I can't attest to skinny jeans, and you wouldn't want to see me in those anyway!).
If you need the ultimate in EDC organization but the minimum in size, this is what you have been looking for.

WINTER 2022 QUARTERLY EDITION KRAFT PLUS 2-PACKS
3½" × 5½"Dot-Graph PaperPerforated
Our Quarterly Editions are frequently complicated productions, and such complexity often yields terrific results. But once in a while, we feel the need to produce a quieter edition that reflects the simplicity of our earliest editions.
Each is a different color. The covers are the result of the interaction of a bright, transparent ink with the lovely, rich tone of the French Paper Co.’s fibrous “Packing Brown Wrap” paper we’ve been using for years on our “Original Kraft” Memo Books. It’s ink and paper as opposed to ink onpaper.
2-Packs are available with burnt-orange (Amber), dusty blue (Aqua) and sage-like green (Moss) covers, with a space at the bottom to index the books by date and subject.
The insides feature Domtar’s splendid, slightly off-white, Cougar Natural 60#T stock with a subtle dot-graph. The pages are micro-perforated, so your notes and lists are secure, but easy to remove when needed.
